Why Is My YouTube Download Failing?
Most failed downloads have one of about six causes, and roughly half of them are not fixable by any tool, because the video itself cannot be served to anyone. Here is how to tell which one you have hit, in plain language and without pretending everything is solvable.
Check whether the video is public, still exists, and is not age-restricted or region-limited. Those four account for most failures and no downloader can bypass them. If the video is public and plays normally for you, wait a minute and try again, since the other common cause is a temporary block from YouTube's side.
Causes nothing can fix
Be suspicious of any site claiming otherwise. These are properties of the video, not of the downloader.
- The video is private or unlisted-and-removed. If it does not play in a logged-out browser, it cannot be downloaded.
- It was deleted between you copying the link and pasting it, which happens more than you would think with fresh links.
- Age-restricted. These require a signed-in session. We deliberately do not use one, and any site that does is asking for your account for a reason you should not accept.
- Region-blocked. The uploader restricted which countries can watch it.
- Members-only or a paid premiere. Behind an access wall by design.
Causes that usually resolve themselves
A temporary block. YouTube sometimes throttles automated requests. It looks like a failure on a video that plays perfectly for you. Waiting a minute or two and retrying works most of the time, because a different route gets used.
The server was busy. If you see a message about the download server being busy, that is honest: too many downloads were running at once. Retrying shortly works.
A very long or very large video. Multi-hour 4K files can exceed time limits. Choosing a lower quality usually gets it through.
Things worth checking on your side
- The whole link was copied. A truncated URL is a surprisingly common cause. It should contain the full video ID.
- You used a video link, not a channel or playlist link, unless you are using the playlist downloader.
- Storage space. A full device stops a download partway with no clear error.
- An ad blocker or extension occasionally interferes. Try once in a private window.
If the download starts then stops
That usually means the connection dropped mid-transfer rather than a problem with the video. Retry, and prefer a stable connection for large files. A partially downloaded file will not play and should be deleted before retrying.
If the file downloads but will not play
Check the extension actually matches what you expected, and try a different player. VLC opens practically everything and is the fastest way to rule out a player problem rather than a file problem. If you asked for MP3 and got a video, you selected the video option before downloading.
